BAN OUTDATED FOAM FOODWARE IN ILLINOIS

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Some plastic just doesn’t belong in 2023, especially single-use plastics. These disposable items make up nearly half of our plastic use, items like plastic foam cups and containers, plastic grocery bags, and much more.

For decades, we’ve known that these items are among the most common and harmful forms of pollution found in the environment. The EPA estimates that Americans throw away almost 70 million plastic foam cups every day. Plastic persists in the environment for hundreds of years, so almost every bit of our plastic waste is still out there clogging our landfills, littering our streets, polluting our parks, and more. 22 million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes each year, and just over half of that ends up in Lake Michigan.

We’re calling on the Illinois legislature to reduce single-use plastic waste, starting with the worst of the worst, plastic foam cups, containers and other food ware. Take action now by contacting your legislators to let them know why we need a foam ban in IL!

As your constituent, I am writing to ask that you vote in support of HB2376/SB100, legislation that would ban foam foodware from Illinois. Plastic pollution is a highly pervasive threat to not only the health of our environment but of all Illinoisans as well. Plastic waste is unique in that it never fully disintegrates, and instead infiltrates our waterways and affects public health and wildlife. As you may know, 22 million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes each year, and just over half of that ends up in Lake Michigan. We can’t recycle our way out of this problem: over 91% of our plastic isn’t recycled, and less than 1% of foam gets recycled. Worse yet, our unrecyclable plastic items clog recycling equipment, contaminate recyclable materials, and pass by optical sorting machinery. That’s why we need to act now and address the worst of these materials– foam cups, containers and other foodware. Polystyrene, known more commonly by the brand name styrofoam, has no place in 2023.
